At Sundial Care Home in Tipton St John, near Sidmouth, what started as a simple idea has grown into a cherished daily ritual. Each evening, family members (residents) gather in the West Hill Lounge for what they’ve named their “bedtime disco” – a lively mix of music, singing and dancing that has become the highlight of the evening.
At the centre of it all is a karaoke machine and microphone, gifted by a friend of a family member, with well-known songs filling the room, with ABBA being a firm favourite among the ladies.
Everyone joins in however they choose, with some dancing, holding hands and singing together, while others are content to sit and clap along. Team members enjoy being a part of it too, Care Assistant Jane is a regular performer in the home, and spontaneous duets between team and family members have become a highlight. A few of the gents from the team have started joining in from time to time — much to the ladies’ surprise, and delight, at just how well they can sing!
For many of the ladies taking part, music is far from a new discovery. Several have spent years playing instruments or singing, and the “bedtime disco” offers a chance to reconnect with a lifelong passion in a way that feels social and a part of daily life again.
Moments like this build confidence and create space for social interaction, bringing people together through shared laughter and familiar songs. Over time, friendships have grown as people spend time side by side. Whether it’s singing, dancing or simply being there, the “bedtime disco” has become something for the individuals living at Sundial Care Home to feel a part of.
